Although every day is special with the one you love, Valentine's Day (or any day) can be a great time to make something special. You can even create handmade items together as a great bonding experience.

Chocolate Body IcingChocolate Body Icing is quick and simple. Some of the items you probably have in your kitchen or ingredient stash.  This formula is for 10 oz. of body icing, but will increase in volume as you whip. The ratio is 65/35 with 65% butters and 35% oils.

6 oz. shea butter

0.5 oz. cocoa butter

3.5 oz. oil(s) of your choice (you can use avocado oil, olive oil, or any oil you have available)

2 tbls. of cocoa powder

Step 1: Weigh butters and oils.  Melt them in the microwave or double boiler. You can refer to other body butter tutorial posts as a reference.

Step 2: Place the container in the refrigerator to cool down quickly. Make sure it's the consistency below before whipping. You need a little texture to whip properly without oil flying all over the place.

Step 3: Whip the mixture until it resembles fluffy cake batter and add cocoa powder. Continue mixing until it's nice and fluffy.

Step 4: Package and it's ready to go. This was done using piping tips but it's not necessary. It just makes it look a little more decorative. Chocolate candy optional lol.

Body Butter FAQ's

How long do body butters last?

Body butters can last anywhere from 6-12 months with proper care. Keep butters in a closed container away from moisture and water.

Do I need to add a preservative to my body butter?

Synthetic preservatives aren't necessary since body butters are made without water. What types of oils and butters can I use to make body butters? You can use any natural oils and butters to make body butters.  Why is my body butter so greasy?

Typically body butters are greasy because too much oil was added to the butter. Keep in mind butters are basically oils with longer carbon chains which effect the texture (oil vs. butter). If you add too much oil or use oils that don't absorb easily into the skin the body butter will have a greasy feel.

Do I have to add cornstarch to cut down on the greasy feel?                                Adding cornstarch can help with the greasy feel but formulating the body butter correctly should eliminate the need to add cornstarch for greasiness.

Why does my body butter get stiff after whipping?

After the initial whipping your body butter will have the consistency of cake batter. After a few hours the butter will deflate and the air will settle. The butter will still be whipped, but not as fluffy as the initial time you whipped. A lot of the texture depends on the type of mixture used as well. A mixing device with more power (Kitchen Aid stand mixer) will create a better texture than a hand mixer.

How do I know how much butter and oil to add?

The body butter is made based on total weight and percentages. Typically I use a 70/30 or 60/40 percentage mix depending on the texture of the butters. Ex. 10 oz total weight of product/70 % = 7 oz.

Making a body butter doesn't require lots of different ingredients.  It's really as simple or complex as you desire. Typically you find body butters with other additives such as cornstarch and arrowroot powder to help with the oily after effect, but quite honestly those things aren't necessary.  Having a great combination of butters and oils will prevent a greasy butter and give you an amazing body butter.  For this tutorial we're using 2 simple ingredients for a wonderful skin loving product.

    Recipe/Formula:

For this recipe we'll make 10 oz. to keep the percentages easy.

    80% mango butter - 8 oz.

    20% avocado oil - 2 oz.

    fragrance is optional

    4 Simple steps to follow:

Step 1: Mix the butter and oils together and melt (using a double boiler or microwave).

Step 2: Place the bowl in the refrigerator to solidify a little.  Notice the sides are a little solid but there's still liquid in the center.

Step 3: After removing it from the refrigerator mix using a mixer. I use a kitchen aid, but a hand mixer will work. Mix until it's light and fluffy.

Step 4: After mixing you can place it in a container and it's ready to use.
